| Resumen en inglés | The liberal culture that is born with the Republic of 9 Thermidor will bequeath to the French liberalism a central topos, namely, the inability of classical republican liberty to formulate an institutional solution to the complex commercial society in Europe of lights. We intend to demonstrate, from the work of two paradigmatic authors of the French liberal culture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth — Germaine de Staël and Benjamin Constant — how the fundamental political concepts that sustain the defense of representative government and freedom policy are inextricably linked to criticism of the Jacobinism as a corruption attempt to rescue ancient republican models and a conception of history as progress. Thus, the system of natural law becomes obsolete to legitimize freedom, leading definitely the theory of history that would impose the political theory of the nineteenth century. We follow Pierre Rosanvallon’s theoretical and methodological orientations, concentrating the study in the formation and evolutions of some concepts that pretend to give rationatiliy on the modern political dimension, and must be comprehended from the difficulties and problems places by the democratization |
| Resumen en portugués | A cultura liberal que nasce com a República do Thermidor legará ao liberalismo francês um topos central, qual seja, o da incapacidade da liberdade republicana clássica em dar conta de formular uma solução institucional para a complexa sociedade comercial da Europa das luzes. Pretendemos demonstrar, a partir da obra de dois autores paradigmáticos da cultura liberal francesa do final do século XVIII e início do XIX Germaine de Staël e Benjamin Constant — como os conceitos políticos fundamentais que sustentam a defesa do regime representativo e da liberdade política estão intrinsecamente ligados à crítica do jacobinismo como corrupção do modelo republicano dos antigos e a uma concepção da história como progresso. Assim, o sistema do direito natural se torna obsoleto para legitimar a liberdade, dando lugar definitivamente à teoria da história que se imporia à teoria política do século XIX. Seguiremos as orientações teórico-metodológicas de Pierre Rosanvallon (2010), concentrando o estudo dos autores na formação e evolução de alguns dos conceitos que procuram dar racionalidade aos os fenômenos políticos da modernidade, e que devem ser compreendidos a partir das dificuldades e dos problemas colocados pela democratização |
