| Resumen en inglés | Arendt's thesis on Augustine (Der Liebesbegriff bei Augustin / Love in Augustine) – presented in 1929 and revised by the author between the 1950’s and 1960’s – is usually taken as a work of youth and therefore neglected by her readers. Against this trend, this paper suggests that we can find in these writings the emergence of themes that will be transposed in later Arendt's efforts to illuminate the political experience. My aim here consists in presenting a general comment on this thesis, indicating its possible similarities with the texts from her maturity, especially with regard to three issues: the revelation of a singular being through action; the role of memory and narrative in the constitution of our existence; and confidence as the only guarantee for our agreements and promises |
| Resumen en portugués | A tese de Arendt sobre Agostinho (Der Liebesbegriff bei Augustin / O Conceito de Amor em Agostinho), apresentada em 1929 e revisada pela autora entre os anos cinquenta e sessenta, é geralmente tomada como obra de juventude e preterida por seus leitores e comentadores. Na contramão dessa tendência, este artigo sugere que possamos encontrar nesses escritos o despontar de temas que serão deslocados pela autora em seus posteriores esforços para iluminar a experiência política. Tratase então de tecer um comentário geral sobre a tese, indicando possíveis aproximações com os textos da maturidade, sobretudo no que diz respeito a três temas: a revelação de um ser singular através da ação; o papel da memória e da narração na constituição de nossa existência; e a confiança como única garantia de nossos acordos e promessas |
