| Resumen en español | Un Comité de Ética en Investigación (CEI) es un grupo multidisciplinario que salvaguarda al sujeto que participará o participa en una investigación clínica del área de la salud bucal o cualquier área biomédica. Un CEI está facultado para revisar y evaluar los aspectos bioéticos de un protocolo de investigación y, consecuentemente, dictaminar si el protocolo es aprobado para su realización. Las instituciones que realizan investigación en ciencias de la salud requieren un CEI; esto incluye a las facultades y escuelas de estomatología/odontología. Los integrantes de las instituciones, sean investigadores, profesores, alumnos o pacientes, deben conocer qué es un CEI y cómo funciona. Los objetivos de esta revisión son: 1) presentar los hechos históricos que llevaron a la necesidad de conformar comités de ética en investigación, y 2) revisar la estructura interna de un CEI, su función y los lineamientos internacionales y nacionales que los regulan. | Resumen en inglés | Research Ethics Committees (RECs) are multidisciplinary teams that protect human subjects participating or who are going to participate in clinical research in the fi eld of oral health or any other biomedical fi eld. The REC reviews and evaluates the bioethical implications of a proposed research protocol and then either grants its authorization or chooses to reject it. All institutions that carry out research in the fi eld of biomedicine are required to have an REC, including schools and faculties of Dentistry and Oral Medicine. The members of these institutions, including faculty, researchers, students, and patients should know what an REC is and what it does. The aims of this study are: 1) to present the historical facts that led to the creation of the fi rsts RECs, and 2) to review the internal structure of RECs, their function, and the international and national guidelines that regulate them. As such, this article could be described as an introductory guide to RECs |
