Resumen en inglés | The Upper Iguaçu Basin, located in the state capital, Curitiba, presents economic importance in the state of Paraná because it is the main source of water supply of Curitiba Metropolitan Region (RMC). However, with population growth, the rivers are being affected by industrial and domestic wastewater. This study aims to determine the concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds (antihypertensive group) in the Iguaçu River and three tributaries of the Upper Iguaçu Basin: Palmital, Atuba and Belém. The results obtained by statistical analysis showed strong correlations of antihypertensive drugs with nutrients and indicated that the rivers of the RMC presented anthropogenic influence, possibly from domestic sewage or effluent from wastewater treatment plants. Contaminants were detected in all four rivers of RMC and it is concluded that other anthropogenic compounds may be present in the aquatic environment. The Atuba River had the highest concentrations of anti-hypertensive drugs (4658,2 ng L-1 of metoprolol, 3877,91 ng L-1 of propranolol and 123,8 ng L-1 of nadolol), at the downstream point of Atuba-Sul WWTP. More studies are needed to understand the dynamics of antihypertensive drugs and other emerging compounds in the environment to identify possible contamination in groundwater and drinking water |
