| Resumen en inglés | When the subject of work is art and its relation to the military universe, it must be taken into account that this subject encompasses the teaching and practice of military architecture for a political-territorial defense between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. This sci-ence and art that taught Portuguese (and Eu-ropean) engineers to defend their monarch and their respective territories must be understood in the light of their representation, that is, the legitimating of sovereign power, both in their teaching (in the treaties of architecture mili-tary), and in its practice (the making of fortifica-tion plants). The language of art is perceptible, for example, when one of the greatest names of classical antiquity, which served as the theoret-ical matrix for these men, was Vitruvius. Among the six terms of Vitruvian architecture (order, disposition, eurythmy, symmetry, decorum and distribution) is the decorum that highlights the aesthetic notion for the construction of defense and, in turn, Portuguese cities in America |
| Resumen en portugués | Quando o tema de trabalho é a arte e a sua relação com o universo militar, deve-se ter em conta que esse assunto engloba o ensino e a prática da arquitetura militar para uma defesa político-territorial, entre os séculos XVI e XVIII. Essa ciência e arte que ensinou engenheiros portugueses (e europeus) a defenderem o seu monarca e os seus respectivos territórios, pre-cisa ser compreendida à luz de sua representa-ção, qual seja, a legitimação do poder soberano, tanto em seu ensino (nos tratados de arquitetu-ra militar), quanto em sua prática (a confecção de plantas de fortificação). A linguagem da arte é perceptível, por exemplo, quando um dos maiores nomes da Antiguidade clássica, que serviu de matriz teórica para esses homens, foi Vitrúvio. Dentre os seis termos da arquitetura vitruviana (ordem, disposição, euritmia, sime-tria, decoro e distribuição), está o decoro que destaca a noção estética para a edificação da defesa e, por sua vez, das cidades portuguesas na América lusa |
