| Resumen en inglés | Religious freedom was one of the most controversial issues in the seventeenth century in England. Such matter was closely related to the pro blem of the extension of the civil jurisdiction or, also, to the relation between civil power and the e cclesiastic power. John Locke actively participated in debates of the time. He dedicated n umerous pieces of writing to the theme. We can point out, among them, A Letters concerning Toleration (1689) . In this work the philosopher presented one of his most important argument defend ing tolerance – the difference between Church and State –, therefore, influencing modernity as a whole. The main objective of this article is to analyze the separation of Church and State argumen t as it can then be found in the Second Treatise and in this Letter due to the political and ecclesiastic communities differences in aims, objects and instruments, without which Locke’s doctrine of tole rance would loose its rational value |
| Resumen en portugués | A liberdade religiosa foi um dos temas mais debatid os no século 17 na Inglaterra. Essa questão estava intimamente relacionada com o proble ma da extensão da jurisdição civil ou, ainda, da relação entre o poder civil e o poder eclesiásti co. John Locke participou ativamente das discussões da época. Ele dedicou vários escritos ao tema, entre eles a Carta sobre Tolerância (1689). Nela está presente um dos argumentos lockianos em d efesa da tolerância que mais influenciou a modernidade, a saber, a distinção Igr eja-Estado.
