| Resumen en español | A partir de los registros de las operaciones de la flota palangrera de altura con permiso para pescar tiburón entre 1983 y 2002, en la Zona Económica Exclusiva del Pacífico Mexicano (ZEEPM), se analiza la distribución espacio-temporal de cuatro especies de tiburón, pez vela, marlin rayado, pez espada, dorado y atún aleta amarilla, para identificar las variaciones de la captura objetivo e incidental en las cuatro áreas en que fue dividida dicha zona y los cuatro trimestres del año, mediante un análisis de varianza multivariado y el método de correlación canónica. En la zona sur fue mayor la probabilidad de pescar pez vela, tiburón martillo y dorado; en la centro, tiburón zorro, aunque se atraparon ejemplares de todas las especies, y las zonas noreste y noroeste, tiburón azul y pez espada. Durante el primer trimestre abundaron el tiburón azul, el marlin rayado y el pez espada, mientras que en el segundo cobraron importancia el dorado y el atún; el pez vela en el tercero y el cuarto. La captura incidental fue más alta al sur de los 16° N, donde las aguas cálidas (30-32 °C) son favorables para el pez vela y el dorado; en cambio, frente a la costa occidental de Baja California fueron más abundantes los tiburones azul y zorro, que prefieren aguas templadas (15-20 °C). La riqueza específica en las zonas centro y noreste podría atribuirse a la variabilidad ambiental resultante de la interacción de corrientes marinas cálidas y frías. Estos resultados pueden servir para aminorar la captura de especies exclusivas de la pesca deportiva en la ZEEPM |
| Resumen en inglés | Records of the 1983-2002 longline fishery operations in the Mexican Pacific Economic Exclusive Zone (MPEEZ) were used to analyze space-time distribution of major species of sharks, sailfish, striped marlin, swordfish, dolphin fish and yellowfin tuna. The aim was to identify variations in spatial and temporal captures of target and incidental catch in the four selected areas and quarters in which the MPEEZ was divided and 4 yearly trimesters, by multivariate variance analysis and canonic correlation. The probability of catching sailfish, hammer shark and dolphin fish in the southern zone was high; in the central area, thresher shark, although other species were also caught; and in the northeast and northwest area, blue shark and swordfish. Blue shark, marlin and swordfish were abundant during the first trimester, while during the second dolphin fish and tuna were important; the sailfish was important during the third and fourth trimester. The highest incidental catch was found south of 16° 00’, where warm water (30-32 °C) favors the presence of sailfish and dolphin fish; in the other hand, off the west coast of Baja California, blue and thresher sharks were more abundant, preferring template waters (15-20 °C). Specific richness of the center and northeast zone could be due to the variability in the environment condition resulting of the warm and cold marine currents. These results can help lower the catch of species exclusive to the sport fishing in the MPEEZ |
