Resumen en inglés A study of surface winds into the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data on the Colombian Basin was performed. To verify the information, the data were compared with direct sources (ICOADS and Central Caribbean buoy 42085) in a coastal and an oceanic site. It was found that the reanalysis smoothes the winds and the data fit better in the oceanic locality. The seasonal and interannual variability of the basin was analyzed. The spatial and temporal variability of the winds is dominated by the Caribbean low level jet. Four regions were spatially delimited: South (Uraba- Morrosquillo corner), West (San Andres y Providencia), Central (Caribbean low level jet) and North. The speed and spatial extent of the jet is intensified in DJF (December-February) and decreases in SON (September-November). JJA (June-August) records the highest velocities in the core jet (>11 m s -1 ), but the spatial extent is reduced. During El Niño, in DJF and MAM (March- May) the velocity of the core jet is lower compared to the average (the frequencies of weak winds increase), while in JJA and SON the speed is higher (the frequencies of strong winds increase). In La Niña the opposite occurs. Seasonal and interannual variability of the jet responds to pressure gradients and surface temperature of the region as well as to the influence of the tropical Pacific and the North Atlantic
