| Resumen en español | La caracterización tradicional de los demostrativos en términos de proximidad o distancia situacional es problemática cuando se aplica al análisis de textos reales, pues con frecuencia remiten a otras unidades textuales o discursivas y son, por lo tanto, no situacionales. El aná- lisis contrastivo del uso de estos elementos deícticos pone de manifiesto este hecho y ayuda a caracterizarlos en las diferentes lenguas consideradas, en nuestro caso, el inglés y el español. La investigación que presentamos aquí parte de un corpus de narraciones de ficción en inglés (que muestra un sistema demostrativo binario) y sus traducciones al español (que exhibe un sistema ternario). Se han analizado los demostrativos this/that y these/those del inglés, y sus respectivas traducciones al español, teniendo en cuenta si son situacionales o no situacionales y si aparecen en el mundo de lo narrado (es decir, el discurso directo) o en el mundo de la narración (el discurso del narrador). El objetivo general del análisis es identificar las estrategias de traducción de los demostrativos (básicamente, mantenimiento o cambio del centro deíctico o neutralización del valor deíctico), y poner de relieve las diferencias interlingüísticas. Nuestro análisis muestra que los demostrativos situacionales y los no situacionales siguen diferentes patrones de traducción. En general, tanto en inglés como en español, los demostrativos situacionales responden a la distribución del espacio deíctico en cada lengua y tienden a mantenerse en las traducciones. En cambio, los demostrativos no situacionales, que combinan las propiedades de la deixis y la anáfora, tienden a neutralizarse, ya que, en español, comparten uso y distribución con la elipsis y los pronombres personales.. |
| Resumen en inglés | Traditionally, demonstratives are characterized in terms of situational proximity or distance, which proves to be problematic when applied to the analysis of real texts. In fact, demonstratives frequently refer to other text or discourse (i.e., non-situational) units. The contrastive analysis of the use of demonstratives highlights this fact and helps to better describe their functioning in the languages considered, in our case English and Spanish. The research presented in this paper is based on examples from narratives of fiction in English (which shows a binary demonstrative system) and their translations into Spanish (which exhibits a ternary demonstrative system). The English demonstratives this/these and that/those and their translations have been analyzed considering whether they are situational or non-situational and they appear in the narrated world (i.e. direct speech) or in the narration world (i.e. the narrator’s speech). The general aim of the analysis is to identify the strategies to translate demonstratives, which imply either the maintenance or shift of the deictic center, or the neutralization of their deictic force, while highlighting the differences between the two languages. Our analysis shows that situational and non-situational demonstratives follow different translation patterns. Situational demonstratives generally behave in accordance with the distribution of the deictic space in relation to the addressor and the addressee both in English and in Spanish, and they tend to be maintained in the translations. On the contrary, non-situational demonstratives are more often neutralized, as they combine the properties of both deixis and anaphora and thus share use and distribution properties with ellipsis and anaphoric personal pronouns in Spanish.. |
