| Resumen en español | Desde finales del siglo XX el nopal (Opuntia spp) ha sido una de las plantas forrajeras más estudiadas por diversas disciplinas; sin embargo, poco se ha documentado sobre el uso del nopal como forraje. Usando el método historiográfico, revisamos fuentes escritas por cronistas, viajeros y científicos, para analizar la importancia y el uso del nopal como forraje del siglo XVI al XX. Se establece que su utilización fue reflejo de la necesidad de alimentación del ganado en zonas áridas del país y en aquellas en donde los periodos de sequía son muy prolongados, constituyendo el Opuntia silvestre un excelente alimento para el ganado. Es también importante señalar que a pesar de la relevancia actual que tiene el nopal forrajero, la producción se mantiene estancada desde hace 10 años. Es posible que los 3 millones de hectáreas con nopales silvestres existentes en el país, sean el motivo por el cual a muchos de los ganaderos no les interesa producir o comprar nopal forrajero, pues lo tienen de manera silvestre. Por ello, no existe una cultura de producción del nopal forrajero |
| Resumen en inglés | Since the end of the 20th Century, nopal (Opuntia spp) has been one of the most studied fodder plants by different disciplines; however, little has been documented regarding the use of nopal as fodder. Using the historiographic method, we reviewed sources written by chroniclers, travelers and scientists, in order to analyze the importance and use of nopal as fodder from the 16th to the 20th Centuries. We suggest that its use was a reflection of the need for feeding livestock in arid areas of the country and in those where drought periods are very lengthy, making the wild Opuntia an excellent food for livestock. It is also important to point out that in spite of the current importance that fodder nopal has, production has been stagnant for the past 10 years. It is possible that the 3 million hectares with wild nopal there are in the country are the reason why many livestock producers are not interested in producing or buying fodder nopal, since they have it in the wild. Therefore, a culture of fodder nopal production does not exist |
