| Resumen en inglés | Roger Bastide, in 1967, and John Thornton, in 1992, offered importantcontributions to the question of the colonial African “nation” in the diaspora,when they defined it as a political institution of the slave societies founded inthe New World. Since then the African “nation” came to represent a conceptualproblematic in itself, rooted in the urban environment and apart from the “su-gar plantation” or “the master house and the slave quarters” complexes.Unfortunately, the following generations, in spite of having considerablyexpanded the empirical basis of the theme, when it came to interpret it, theyoverestimated the role of collective imagination and of the “invention oftradition”, influenced as they were by prestigious academic models developedfor other historical contexts. This article discusses in detail some of the mainmoments in the trajectory of this problematic |
| Resumen en portugués | Roger Bastide em 1967 e John Thornton em 1992 trouxeram uma importantecontribuição ao tema da “nação africana colonial” na diáspora, ao defini-lacomo instituição política das sociedades escravistas fundadas no Novo Mun-do. A nação africana passaria desde então a constituir uma problemática con-ceitual própria, situada em ambiente urbano e distinta do “complexo do enge-nho” ou da “casa-grande & senzala”. Infelizmente as gerações seguintes, ape-sar de terem propiciado uma considerável ampliação da base empírica, nomomento da interpretação, influenciadas por modelos acadêmicas prestigio-sas criados a partir de outros contextos históricos, superestimando o papel daimaginação coletiva e da invenção de tradições.
