Resumen en portugués | The paper looks at the historicity of existing categories of maracatu variations and diversity, categorized as “baque virado” (nation-style or turned-around beat) and “baque solto” (rural-style or free-beat maracatu) by scholars such as Guerra Peixe and Katarina Real. The analysis indicates evidence on what maracatus were like before the classification system introduced by Peixe between 1949 and 1952, showing that his analysis changed over the years and became established among maracatuzeiros themselves, thus leading to the current musical forms. The source material utilized includes newspapers and interviews with former maracatuzeiros, as well as an extensive bibliographic review |
