| Spanish abstract | Este estudio ausculta cómo se han ido desarrollando en Puerto Rico ciertas tendencias valorativas que nos inclinan más hacia el beneficio posmaterial y menos hacia las necesidades materiales. La base teórica la provee la teoría sobre el desarrollo de tendencias posmaterialistas del Dr. Ronald Inglehart. Se utilización datos del World Values Survey que se llevó a cabo en Puerto Rico para analizar cómo varían las tendencias materiales y posmateriales tanto entre diferentes regiones de la Isla como entre individuos, dependiendo del nivel socio-económico que les caracteriza. Los resultados demuestran que, a pesar de que la situación socio-económica en Puerto Rico es comparativamente menos desarrollada que la de otros países, existe una marcada tendencia hacia los valores y las necesidades posmaterialistas |
| English abstract | This study analyzes the development in Puerto Rico of certain values that lead us into fulfilling our postmaterialistic needs rather the searching for materialistic benefits. The theorical fundation for this analysis is Dr. Ronald Inglehart´s theory of postmaterialistic tendencies. Data from the Puerto Rico wave of the World Values Survey was used to test the hypothesis that regions in Puerto Rico with different socio-economics characteristics will reflect different levels postmaterialistic chievement. This hypothesis was also tested alt the individual level. The results show that, despite Puerto Rico´s disadvantaged economic position compared to that of other development countries, there is an evident tendency towars the fulfillment of postmaterialistic values and needs |
