| Spanish abstract | En este artículo analizo la valoración de los cenotes en el mercado de tierras ejidales que ha tenido lugar en una población rural del oriente de Yucatán en los últimos tres años. Ante la creciente venta de parcelas ejidales con cenotes -una de las fuentes hídricas más importantes en este estado mexicano-, muestro las estrategias que un grupo de ejidatarios ha utilizado para defender el acceso comunitario al agua y rechazar su mercantilización. Desde mi perspectiva, la estrategia más efectiva se ha desprendido de la apropiación local de la legislación agraria, dadas las limitaciones de las leyes mexicanas sobre el agua para garantizar el acceso de los pueblos a ese recurso. | English abstract | This paper analyzes the value of cenotes in the ejidal land market of a rural village in Eastern Yucatan. Faced with the growing sale of ejidal lands with cenotes -one of the most important water sources in this Mexican state- I illustrate the strategies used by a group of ejidatarios to defend their community’s access to water and to reject its commodification. I argue that the most effective strategy used by this group is derived from the local appropriation of land legislation, given the limitations of water laws to guarantee people’s access to that resource.
