| Spanish abstract | En este artículo se examina el establecimiento de la colonia japonesa San Juan en la región de Santa Cruz, Bolivia, a mediados del siglo veinte. A partir del estudio de los principales documentos de la época junto con fuentes bibliográficas en inglés, japonés y español, este artículo estima que la migración japonesa de posguerra en Bolivia fue construida aprovechando la coyuntura histórica boliviana pero articulada, principalmente, en ambos extremos de la línea migratoria por el gobierno japonés y sus políticas de control de población. Se observa que la motivación política a nivel gubernamental es fundamental para comprender este movimiento migratorio, en este caso, incluyendo el gobierno de E.U., el cual permitió aunar posiciones en torno a la migración en la región de Santa Cruz |
| English abstract | This article examines the establishment of the Japanese settlement of San Juan in the Santa Cruz region of Bolivia in the mid-20th century. Based on a study of the most important documents from that time, together with the related literature in English, Spanish and Japanese, this article suggests that postwar Japanese migration to Bolivia responded to Bolivia's historical context at that time, but was connected, at both ends of the migration route, to the Japanese government and its population-control policies. It is noted that the political motivation of governments is fundamental to understanding this migration movement, and included in this case is the US government, which made it possible to find a meeting point among the positions on migration to the Santa Cruz region |
