| Spanish abstract | Sobre la base de una metodología que contrasta ediciones de libros, este artículo se propone estudiar el saber geográfico patrio elaborado a partir de versiones establecidas desde finales de siglo xviii y principios del xix. Más que un saber objetivo, la geografía patria constituía un crisol de variados discursos que todavía estaban entremezclados y hacían parte de los géneros literarios y las técnicas comprendidas por la retórica, y no tanto de una disciplina científica y autónoma con métodos, procedimientos e instrumentos propios, sino la mixtura entre relatos de viajes, descripciones, datos e información histórica, cuyo propósito era elevar el fervor de los ciudadanos y proveer de una representación común del territorio a una población habituada a aprender más a través del oído que de la visión |
| English abstract | Based on a methodology that contrasts book publishing, this article aims to study the knowledge of national geography in Colombia based on versions established from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. More than being objective knowledge, the nation’s geography constituted a crucible of several discourses which were still intertwined; they were part of the literary genre and of techniques comprised by rhetoric, and they were not part of an autonomous scientific discipline having its own procedures and instruments. Instead, it was a mixture of narrations of voyages, descriptions, and historical data and information whose purpose was to increase citizens’ fervor and provide a common representation of the territory of people who were accustomed to learning more by hearing than by seeing |
