| Spanish abstract | Este ensayo explora el tema de la gestualidad dentro de los claustros femeninos novohispanos. Lo hace en aras de contribuir a la reflexión sobre la historia del cuerpo femenino en el periodo virreinal, durante el cual el cuerpo fue considerado como un espacio e instrumento de socialización, piedad y salvación. De ahí que uno de los propósitos de este texto sea el de analizar la forma en que los índices corporales fueron “puestos en escena” para descifrar el alma y dotar al cuerpo de cualidades espirituales. El texto parte de la premisa de que ingresar al convento y vivir en él implicó –entre otras cosas– aprender un uso particular del cuerpo |
| English abstract | This essay explores the subject of gesturality inside colonial female cloisters in order to contribute to the thinking of the history of the female body in Mexico’s viceroyalty. The body in this period was presented as an instrument and a space of socialization, piety and salvation. Hence, one of the purposes of this text is to explore the form in which the different corporal indexes were “mise en scène” in order to unravel the soul and endow the body of spiritual qualities. The premise of this text sustains that entering the convent, and living in it, involved –among other things– learning a particular use of the body |
