| English abstract | The sociobiology was considered a controversy discipline during its first years, but such as the theory of natural selection itself, the sociobiology became a fundamental part of the study of social behavior. Since its beginning with the social insects, the sociobiological approach always brought new arguments and generated new theories that resulted in several classic studies of animal behavior, and even a new important field of study. Despite all the progress already made since Darwin, the study of the biological basis of social behavior still has a great potential to cause major transformations in science. | Portuguese abstract | A sociobiologia foi considerada uma disciplina polêmica durante seus primeiros anos, mas tal como a própria teoria da seleção natural, tornou-se uma parte fundamental do estudo do comportamento social. Desde seus primórdios, com os insetos sociais, a abordagem sociobiológica sempre trouxe novos argumentos e gerou teorias que resultaram em diversos estudos clássicos do comportamento animal, e em até uma nova importante área de estudo. Apesar de todo o progresso já alcançado desde Darwin, o estudo das bases biológicas do comportamento social ainda possui um grande potencial para causar relevantes transformações na ciência.
