| English abstract | The present study aims to argue for the possibility of pragmatic moral cognitivism, supported by works of Wittgenstein and his indebtedness to James’ thoughts. Therefore, the article intends to show that moral judgments, to pragmatic moral cognitivism, are cognitive to the extent that they meet their objectivity in the praxis of the language-game. Thus, on the one hand the metaethical debate between realists and anti-realists, particularly McDowell and Blackburn, seems to be completely insufficient by disregarding in their theories the problems dissipated by James’ pragmatism. On the other hand, the core that resists in Wittgenstein, unlike pragmatism, is to understand that words are only meaningful in their use, forgoing the search for an experience that increasingly allows for an approximation to the truth. Finally, we show that the affinity of horizons between the authors seems to lie in the fact that they both share an anti-foundational attitude, that is, basic beliefs cannot be self-justified |
| Portuguese abstract | O objetivo deste artigo é defender a possibilidade do cognitivismo moral pragmático, sustentado a partir dos trabalhos de Wittgenstein e sua dívida ao pensamento de James. Sendo assim, pretende-se mostrar que os juízos morais, para o cognitivismo moral pragmático, são cognitivos na medida em que encontram na práxis do jogo de linguagem a sua objetividade. Assim, por um lado, o debate metaético entre realistas e antirrealistas, especialmente McDowell e Blackburn, parece ser totalmente insuficiente ao não considerar em suas teorias os problemas dissolvidos pelo pragmatismo de James. Por outro, o núcleo que resiste em Wittgenstein, diferentemente do pragmatismo, é compreender que as palavras somente significam no seu uso, renunciando a busca de uma experiência que permita cada vez mais a aproximação à verdade. Por fim, mostramos que a afinidade de horizontes entre os autores parece residir no fato de que ambos compartilham uma atitude antifundacionista, isto é, as crenças básicas não podem ser justificações a partir de si mesmas |
