| Spanish abstract | RESUMEN Dentro del conjunto de las especialidades médicas, la medicina crítica es joven y a pesar de ello poco se habla de su historia. Muchos son los actores que afirman ser los primeros en la organización de su terapia intensiva, pero es difícil asegurar exactamente quién ostenta dicho honor. Más importante aún es suponer y admitir que fue más bien un movimiento iniciado en los países desarrollados y que se hizo global a lo largo de las siguientes dos décadas, habiendo sido la medicina mexicana un importante representante temprano de dicha corriente, aunque suele considerarse el manejo de la epidemia de polio de los años 50 en Dinamarca como el nacimiento de esta disciplina. Florence Nightingale fue la madre de la enfermería moderna, entre 1853 y 1856 durante la guerra de Crimea tuvo la idea original de concentrar en un solo sitio a los heridos más graves para optimizar su vigilancia y manejo, uno de los elementos clave para el nacimiento posterior de la terapia intensiva, disciplina que se ha desarrollado extraordinariamente a lo largo del tiempo, teniendo ya consolidado su propio cuerpo de conocimientos al ser una especialidad robusta que marca diferencia y distingue a las instituciones de salud |
| English abstract | ABSTRACT Between the group de medical specialties, Critical Care is still young, in spite of this not too much is discused about his history. Many are the actors that claim being the first in organizing their Intensive Care Unit, and it is difficult to exactly assure who has the honor. It is maybe more important to consider that it was a kind of movement started in developed countries that became global in the next two decades, being the Mexican medicine an early and important representative in that current. Although it is generally considered the Danish management of the polio epidemias in the fifties as the birth of this discipline, it was Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursery who during de Crimea war between 1853 and 1856, had the original idea to concentrate in one specific place the critically injured to optimize their observation and monitoring, one of the key issues for the flourishment of Critical Care, discipline that has got an enormous development across time, having yet its own body of knowledge and being a robust medical specialty that marks a difference and distinguishes health institutions |
