English abstract The term sense of presence is often mentioned in studies of virtual reality. Due to the apparent importance of this term and the possibility of this technology to be used by behavior analysts in different contexts, such as therapeutic and educational ones, a definition of sense of presence with a focus on an analytical behavioral theory is proposed. To achieve this goal, it was considered: the concept of sense of presence and its different definitions in the traditional literature of studies of sense of presence; the concept of private events and the concept of stimulus control in the behavior analytic literature; and some of the independent variables that affect the sense of presence as empirical studies have been demonstrated. Based on the concept of stimulus control, sense presence can be defined as the feeling of “being there” in the virtual environment, which involves the individual’s responses (either public or private) to discriminative and elicitors stimuli presented in that environment and that are maintained by the consequences that those responses produces on it. It is suggested that the more stimulus discrimination and stimulus generalization in the virtual environment controls (which can be facilitated by the use of devices that promote a greater interaction with the virtual scenarios) greater is the quantity and quality of the elicited and evoked responses emitted in relation to the virtual environment, like that elicited and evoked by non-virtual environments. The feeling of “being there” is a subjective byproduct of that stimulus control and can be defined including the description of the event and public action involved Considered as a feeling, it presents public and private components and is under the control of environment stimuli. The term sense of presence can be useful to facilitate communication with scientists of others approaches. However, it should be noted that, according to the..
