English abstract Taking into account the different economic, social, environmental, political, and cultural phenomena in which the university has been immersed as an institution throughout its history, this article reflects on the argument that college primarily trains for life. As college has evolved, its functions have also change to better impact its relationship with society. The institution of higher education has redefined its objective from cognitive training to integral training, which encompasses learning in the different dimensions of the human experience and better applicability of knowledge in the life of the individuum and society at large. College education today seeks to prepare alumni so that they can assume different roles when facing the different challenges that life throws at them. In this sense, this article analyzes four key premises to understand the proposed argument: first, teaching as an individual and collective purpose; second, the challenges of college nowadays and integral teaching as the axis of its missions; third, training for life and the role of the university proffesor, and fourth, the challenges of the colombian college in relationship to training for life
