English abstract The essay investigates the relation between curiosity, leisure and reading in 16 th and 17 th centuries. It analyzes the development of modern reader which crystallized during the 17 th century around the questioning attitude, since this was the meaning of the word curiosity in the age. The study is based on the analysis of the terms ‘curiosity’ (investigation, knowledge), ‘leisure’ and ‘reading’. Following the trajectory of the word curiosity in European languages, such term acquires a positive meaning the 16 th and 17 th centuries. Also, with the improvement of the modern reader, a well-learned reader, that contrasted texts, reading stopped being collective to become the silent, individual and lonely reading
Portuguese abstract O artigo investiga a relação entre curiosidade, ócio e leitura nos séculos XVII e XVIII. Analisa a formação do leitor moderno que se cristaliza ao longo do século XVII em torno da atitude interrogativa, pois este era o sentido da palavra curiosidade no período. O estudo baseia-se na análise dos vocábulos “curiosidade” (investigação, conhecimento), “ócio” e “leitura”. Seguindo a trajetória da palavra curiosidade nas línguas europeias, esse vocábulo adquire um sentido positivo nos séculos XVII e XVIII. Assim também, com o aperfeiçoamento do leitor moderno, um leitor douto, que contrastava textos, a leitura deixa de ser coletiva para ser a leitura silenciosa, individual e solitária
