English abstract Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by a loss in bone density, with deterioration in the microarchitecture of bone tissue, which leads to fractures. Studies showed the use of various tools, such as the mandibular cortical index (MCI), to detect early signals of osteoporosis in the maxilla and mandible, especially in women with low bone mineral density, high bone turnover and / or high risk of osteoporotic fracture. The aim of this research was to evaluate mandibular bone mineral density in women and its relationship with bone densitometry of spine and femur. It was a descriptive, associative and correlational study. The sample was 60 females between 35 and 80 years old. It was using ICM (Klemetti); osteoposis diagnostic: normal T score >-1,0; osteopenia: T-score: -2,5 a ≤ 1,0 osteoporosis: T-score ≤-2,5 (WHO); bone densitometry (DXA). There was significantly and positive correlation between right ICM and left (r: 0.717; p: 0.000), with spine densitometry (r: 0.369; p: 0.004) and left femur (r: 0.475; p: 0.000), while that left ICM was correlated significantly and positive with spine densitometry (r: 0.377; p: 0.003) and left femur (r: 0.380; p: 0.003). Concordance was observed between ICM with spine and femur `s bone densitometry. These findings suggest the use of panoramic radiography as a tool to detect patients with low bone mineral density and early signals of osteopenia or osteoporosis, and thus refer the patient to appropriate professionals for more comprehensive and conclusive studies
