| English abstract | The purpose of this paper is to show how the Platonic conception of education is structured by combining rationality with the impulse of love. For the philosopher of the Academy, the souls of mortals are only able to recover their transcendent nature if endowed with reason, because reason alone allows the soul to aspire towards what is “best”. Although rationality is capable of concentrating in souls their ability to move towards the Good, souls will achieve nothing if they are not moved by Love. Therefore Love and Reason, united in the “love of knowledge”, are the engine and the ultimate goal of the educational process |
| Portuguese abstract | O objetivo deste texto é mostrar como a concepção platônica da educação é estruturada pela conjugação da racionalidade com o impulso amoroso. Para o filósofo da Academia, a alma dos mortais só é capaz de recuperar a sua natureza transcendente se for dotada de Razão, porque só ela lhe permite aspirar ao “melhor”. No entanto, por mais que a racionalidade condense na alma a sua capacidade de se orientar para o Bem, nada ela alcançará se não for movida pelo Amor. É por isso que, aliados no “amor ao saber”, Amor e Razão constituem motor e fim último do processo educativo |
