| English abstract | The article intends to analyze an interpretative difficulty that is found in Nicholas Malebranche’s works concerning the nature of ideas. From the conjunction of thesis sustained by the author in the development of his theory of cognition, the vision in God, the ideas do not seem to belong to any ontological category in the framework assumed by Malebranche. First, it will be presented in which way the theory of ideas leads to the, at least, apparent contradiction between epistemology and ontology in Malebranche. Then, in a second moment, it will be investigated the possible alternatives of interpretation that do not jeopardize the coherence of the theory proposed |
| Portuguese abstract | O artigo pretende analisar a dificuldade interpretativa encontrada nos textos de Nicolas Malebranche acerca da natureza das ideias. A partir da conjunção de teses afirmadas pelo autor ao longo do desenvolvimento da sua teoria da cognição, a visão em Deus, as ideias não parecem pertencer à nenhuma categoria ontológica reconhecida por Malebranche. Em um primeiro momento, será apresentado de que maneira a teoria das ideias conduzem à afirmação de uma, ao menos, aparente contradição entre a epistemologia e a ontologia sustentada por Malebranche. E, em um segundo momento, de que maneira podemos apresentar alternativas interpretativas que não coloquem em questão a validade da teoria que é proposta pelo autor |
