English abstract The use of sardines as bait may attract a wide variety of insects. The study aimed to analyze the diversity of insects caught by a trap typically used for catching flies in the Biological Reserve of Tinguá in four different locations, analyze the influence of environmental variables (temperature, rainfall, and relative humidity) on insect abundance, and compare the insect fauna in different locations using faunal analyses. Seasonal samples were taken over two years using traps with sardines exposed at different sites for 48 hours: A, at the forest edge; B, C, and D, located at 1,000, 500 and 2,000 meters inside the forest, respectively. A total of 223 insects were caught in addition to Diptera, of the 118 (52.68%) Coleoptera, 63 (54.78%) belonged to the Staphylinidae family, 16 (13.91%) to the Histeridae family, 14 (12.17%) to the Cryptophagidae family, 13 (11.30%) to the Silphidae family, and the families Scarabaeidae and Nitidulidae had six representatives (5.22%) each. Of the 99 (44.20%) Hymenoptera, 89 (89.90%) were of the Vespidae family, nine (9.09%) of the Apidae family, and one (1.01%) of the Formicidae family. Six (2.68%) members of the Orthoptera order were collected: four (66.67%) of the Tettigoniidae family and two (33.33%) of the Gryllacrididae family. The rarefaction curve indicated that sampling was sufficient to achieve the number of families in the community. Environmental variables did not influence the abundance of families captured. However, more insects were caught during spring and winter. Faunal analyses (Dominance_D, Shannon_H, Equitability_J, Chao-1) showed that the locations differed faunistically. Point D had the highest species abundance and variety. The study trap is not highly specific for Diptera
