| English abstract | This paper discusses slave families and the power relationships between freedwomen and their former masters in the interior of Bahia during the second half of the nineteenth century, namely in the Arraial do Brejo Grande (presentday Ituaçu), in the Southwest of Bahia. Focusing on the case study of two slave families and examining the freedwomen’s court battles with their former masters for custody of their children, the paper seeks to provide insights into the dynamics and complexity of life in the Bahian semiarid at the end of the nineteenth century |
| Portuguese abstract | Neste trabalho, procura-se caracterizar e discutir a família escrava e as relações de poder entre forras e ex-senhores no sertão baiano da segunda metade do século XIX, mais propriamente no Arraial do Brejo Grande (atual Ituaçu), região sudoeste da Bahia. A partir do estudo de caso de duas famílias escravas e do estudo das lutas das mulheres forras na justiça, contra seus ex-senhores, pela tutela de seus filhos, procura-se fornecer indícios da dinâmica e da complexidade da vida no sertão baiano do final do século XIX |
