| English abstract | In German literature, a specific genre, the novela ( Novelle ) stands out among the different possibilities for setting events in fiction. It has serv ed several writers from the eighteenth century to the present day to discuss events as something be yond human understanding. Goethe defined the ‘novela’ as an unprecedented event ( unerhörte Begebenheit ). In Thomas Mann’s novela Death in Venice , the event appears in the figure of the young Tadzio. His unusual beauty, rela ted by Gustav von Aschenbach to mythical figures, not only arouses Aschenbach’s passion but leads him to acknowledge the tension between the desire of chaos and desire of form. The event, in the form of Tadzio’s ambiguous beauty, leads to self-knowledge and to ruin, and provides an insight into the relati onship between beauty and knowledge in Thomas Mann |
| Portuguese abstract | Dentre as diferentes possibilidades de configuração de acontecimentos na ficção, destaca-se, na literatura de língua alemã, um gênero específico, a Novelle (novela), que tem servido a diversos escritores, desde o século XVIII até os dias de hoje, para discutir a qu estão do acontecimento como algo que ultrapassa a compreensão humana. Goethe define a ‘novela’ como um ‘acontecimento inaudito’ ( unerhörte Begebenheit ). Na famosa ‘novela’ de Thomas Mann (1875-1955), A Morte em Veneza , o acontecimento surge na figura do jovem Tadzio. Sua beleza incomum, relacionada por Gustav von Aschenbach a motivos míticos, não apenas desperta a paixão do escritor pelo rapaz, mas o leva a reconhecer em si mesmo a tensão entre o desejo do caos e o desejo da forma. O acontecimento, na forma da beleza ambígua de Tadzio, o conduz assim tanto ao conhecimento de si quanto à ruína, e permite uma reflexão sobre as relações entre beleza e conhecimento em Thomas Mann |
